Two forklift operators were charged on Tuesday (11 December) for attempting to obtain $1 bribes from truck drivers.

According to a Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) press release, Chen Ziliang, 47, and Zhao Yucun, 43, were both employed by Cogent Container Depot. Both allegedly tried to obtain bribes from truck drivers in exchange for speeding up their work processes.

Chen was charged with one count of corruptly attempting to obtain a bribe of $1 from a truck driver as an inducement for not delaying the movement of a container onto their trucks.

He faces another similar charge involving other truck drivers from whom he allegedly tried to gain bribes of small value between May 2016 and March this year.

Similarly, Zhao was handed one charge of attempting to corruptly obtain bribes of a similar value from truck drivers as an incentive to not delay the collection or return of containers onto their vehicles between September 2014 and March this year.

Zero tolerance for bribes: CPIB

“Employees are expected to carry out their duties fairly instead of obtaining bribes in exchange for favours,” said the CPIB.

“Even if the bribe amount is as low as $1, they can be taken to task. Bribes of any amount of any kind will not be tolerated.”

If convicted, the two face up to five years’ jail, a maximum fine of $100,000, or both.
