25th European Union Film Festival Comes To A Successful End
The European Union Film Festival (EUFF), the longest-running foreign film festival in Singapore, was held this May at GV Suntec City with the highest attendance since its inception. In total, more than 3,000 viewers watched the 29 films on offer at the festival, which showcased the best of contemporary and award-winning European film production.
This year’s edition was the largest EUFF with 29 participating European countries – Latvia, Malta and Serbia being the latest additions – the festival celebrated 25 years of passion for European cinema as it ran concurrently with the 68th Cannes Film Festival in France.
Incidentally, the opening film “The Connection” (2013) is a French film presented by France as a partner country of the festival. This also marked another “connection” that the EUFF has with Singapore as the nation celebrates its 50th birthday this year.
Of the 29 film screenings, seven were sold out. Two of these were “Ida” (2014) directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, the Polish film that won the 2015 Academy Award for best foreign-language film and “The Wonders” (2014), a Swiss-Italian production by director Alice Rohrwacher, recipient of the Cannes Grand Prix. The other five films were “The Broken Circle Breakdown” (2012) from Belgium, “A Royal Affair” (2012) from Denmark, “Tangerines” (2014) from Estonia, “The 100-year-old-man who climbed out the window and disappeared” (2013) from Sweden and “Borgman” (2013) from The Netherlands.
With “passion” as the leitmotif that ran through the films in the 25th lineup, the festival brought the arts and culture of Europe to a Singapore audience as it served as the European Union’s flagship event in Singapore’s cultural calendar.
