SINGAPORE — The main instigator involved in an unprecedented case of wife-sharing rape incidents was sentenced to 29 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane on Thursday (4 May).

The Straits Times reported that the 42-year-old man, a father of four, conspired with five other men to have his own wife drugged and raped over a period of eight years.

He also conspired with two men to rape their wives. These assaults were carried out with the men taking photos and videos of the acts, and without the use of contraceptive protection.

The man, who was identified only as J in court documents to protect the identities of the victims, was hit with the most number of charges among the seven men who were hauled to court for this case.

He pleaded guilty to six charges - five counts of conspiring to commit rape and one charge of sexual assault - with another 11 charges taken into consideration.

'Egregious sexual perversion'

The Straits Times reported Justice See Kee Oon saying during sentencing, "This case involves a shocking betrayal of marital trust and egregious sexual perversion.”

The judge added that he was not convinced that J was completely remorseful of his actions, as his mitigation pleas were filled with attempts to deflect responsibility and shift blame to others, and even resorted to victim-blaming.

The man, who was not represented by a lawyer, had accused his wife of being unfaithful, and said his actions were in retaliation to her infidelity.

He had also submitted a psychiatric report stating that he had a sex addiction, but the judge did not accept that the report was reliable or relevant.

Hatched plan after being rebuffed

J, a safety officer, married his wife in 2008. He was rebuffed by her when he asked her whether she was interested in a threesome, so he concocted a plan to sedate her for other men to have sexual intercourse with her.

He got to know the other co-accused men on the SammyBoy online sex forum, as well as other platforms where people talked about exchanging sexual partners and sharing their wives.

This led to multiple occasions between 2010 and 2018 when J conspired with three other husbands - K, L and M - as well as two other men (N and O) for them to rape his wife. J and K also secretly live-streamed themselves having sex with their wives to others.

J also raped K’s wife on three occasions between 2012 and 2013, and raped M’s former wife in 2018. Another man, P, had attempted to rape L's wife but she regained consciousness before he could do so.

The crimes came to light after J‘s wife saw explicit images of herself on his mobile phone on 1 January 2020, and confronted her husband and K.

Four others received lengthy jail terms

Four of the men involved - K, L, M and N - were sentenced in November last year, receiving jail terms of between 13-and-a-half years and 22 years. Three of them received 20 strokes of the cane, while the fourth did not as he was above 50.

The sixth man, P, was sentenced to three years' jail in January 2022. The case for the last man, O, is pending.
