SINGAPORE — Eight persons including one Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer were conveyed to hospitals for burn injuries and smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a row of shops at Block 720 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 on Friday afternoon (5 July).

The burnt low-rise block and nearby buildings were cordoned off, with many SCDF and Singapore Police Force personnel spotted at the scene. They evacuated residents while firefighters combated the blaze.

Billowing smoke from the fire can be seen from a distance by residents in the estate.

The SCDF said in an updated post on Facebook at 7.03pm that it responded to the fire at 3.45pm.

“The raging fire had engulfed the ground floor of the block and threatening to spread. Thick black smoke was bellowing upwards towards the residential units.

“Occupants of the block, including children from a nearby learning centre, were evacuated by SCDF and Police officers,” the SCDF said.

A total of 19 emergency vehicles and about 60 firefighters were deployed to the scene. At one point, 10 water jets and an unmanned firefighting machine were used.

The fire involved four shops on the ground floor, each with an adjoining second floor unit. It was brought under control by 4.30pm, and damping down operations are ongoing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the SCDF said.

One eyewitness saw several police personnel guiding a group of children wearing smoke hoods away from the affected area.

He said, “Multiple small explosions can be heard from a paint shop, ping pong ping pong. Thick black smoke can be seen."
