“The Acolyte” star Dafne Keen recalls lightsaber training mishap that led to a hotel evacuation

A laser sword is no match for a fire alarm.

Training to become a Jedi takes skill. It takes patience. It takes practice. Lots and lots of practice. However, it seems one of those practice sessions led to an evacuation, and almost got an actor on The Acolyte kicked out of her hotel.

The actor in question was Dafne Keen, who plays Padawan Jecki Lon on the Disney+ series, which launches June 4. A half-human, half-Theelin, Jecki is the apprentice to Master Sol (played by Lee Jung-jae), and while Jecki does the bulk of her training in the Jedi temple on Coruscant, the actress who plays her had to settle for a more spartan setting to get her lightsaber work up to snuff.

“I was staying in a hotel,” the now 19-year-old Keen tells Entertainment Weekly of her time during filming on the series. “I was underage, so I was staying in a hotel and my chaperone was staying in another room, and I would go train in the hotel gym.”

Sounds like a solid plan so far. Except there was one teeny, tiny issue. For while Master Yoda may proclaim that “size matters not,” it did, in fact, matter in this case. “The hotel gym was quite low. It didn't have high ceilings, and I was doing this thing that you do over your head,” explains Keen while acting out her maneuver. “And I hit a fire alarm.”

That was just the beginning of the fun. “The entire hotel started going ‘BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!,’ and then they evacuated the whole hotel.”

After the hotel cleared out, it was time to find the culprit, the same culprit who almost missed her job interview to be on the show in the first place. “I stood outside with my stick, and they were like, ‘It originated in the gym.’ And then they looked at the CCTV, and the CCTV is me just like [doing a lightsaber move above my head].”

While The Acolyte may be delving into the mystery of the Sith, this particular mystery had been easily solved. “I was escorted by them," Keen recalls. “They were like, 'You can't.' I wasn't kicked out, but they were like, ‘Can you just be careful?’ It was embarrassing. I was like, ‘Guys, I can't say this to you yet, but in two years this will make sense. I promise you I'm not just someone who likes to play with sticks.’”

Which is not to say Keen did not like to play with sticks. In fact, the physical part of the job was a main draw to the project. “I love doing stunts. Any job that includes stunts, I'm like, ‘Sign me on!’ And the fact that I got to be a Jedi and have a saber and do saber fights was really enjoyable. Learning all of those formations was really gratifying.”

She also was a quick learner… once she mastered the basics. “I was especially proud of this scene which you see in the trailer where Jecki’s training with the rest of the Padawans. That was sprung on me the day before we shot it, and I had to learn that entire sequence. I think when you're training every day, you don't really realize how far you've come. And that was the moment when I was like, ‘Oh, wait, I now know how to do this. If they'd have given me this sequence on day one, I would've not gotten past the first two moves.’”

No word on how many moves Keen got past before initiating a full hotel evacuation, but hopefully that is the last mishap that happens either on-screen or off.
