Angelina Jolie and her daughter, Vivienne, have just finished their first creative collaboration with Broadway's The Outsiders—and as the actress recently told Deadline, the experience only brought them closer together.

Jolie signed onto the project as a producer after Vivienne joined as a volunteer. When she saw her daughter's enthusiasm for the play, Jolie decided it was the ideal opportunity to connect with her.

"My daughter Viv loves theater," Jolie said. "She appreciates all theater but she certainly knows what she feels close to and what she responds to. She went to see The Outsiders at La Jolla about five times and was telling me about it, and I had read the book, and I’d seen the film years ago."

The pair then saw the play together. "Really, as a mother, as a person, I was watching it, but I was really watching the effect it was having on my young daughter and what she was telling me about herself, and I was learning what about it was important to her and why it connected so deeply to her," said Jolie.

Jolie's personal connection to the play through her daughter inspired her to come on board. "It was a very different experience of understanding, of how this is having a significant effect on her as a young person right now, and she’s communicating something to me, and that is the power of this material, which was in really good shape even by then," she explained. "And then I had the privilege of watching everyone work over this last year to make it into what it is, and Vivienne has been there the whole way."

After seeing the production together, Jolie worked with Vivienne to bring something new to the play.

"Viv and I sat together and we wrote down what we liked, what we were curious about," she said. "And they responded to our notes. For me, it was a moment to learn more about Viv, not me thinking of becoming a producer."

Apparently, Vivienne even gave her mother notes as the production went on. "Vivienne would watch the show and give me the most amazing notes," she said. "Like, incredible eye. So, it was a wonderful, wonderful support, and also, obviously, made the work better."

Since working together on the production, Jolie and Vivienne have appeared at a number of events together. In April, the pair appeared on the red carpet for the press night of the play, and in May, the mother-daughter duo were spotted together again, this time, with Vivienne supporting her mother during her appearance on The Today Show. Later that month, the pair kept their theatrical streak going, attending the premiere of Reefer Madness: The Musical at The Whitley in Los Angeles,
