Anthony Loke: Singapore and Malaysia to conclude RTS Link project by April 2020

Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that Singapore and Malaysia are still committed to finishing the agreement on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project by April 2020, reported Bernama.
In his Facebook blog post, Mr Loke disclosed that he had “paid a visit” to Khaw Boon Wan, his Singaporean counterpart, during which “discussed the progress on the RTS project between JB and Woodlands”.

“It was a fruitful discussion and both of us are committed to concluding the agreement by April this year,” he said.
The RTS Link project faced uncertainty after the 2018 Malaysian general election, as the new government made a review of all agreements entered into by the previous administration.
When completed, the RTS project will connect Woodlands in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and would serve 10,000 passengers every hour each way.
It was originally planned for completion in 2024, but is currently behind schedule.
Malaysia suspended the project for the third time in November 2019 to ensure that all necessary agreements could be revised and signed. Loke labelled the suspension, scheduled to end in April 2020, as the “implementation phase”.
The suspension came after Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad announced that Malaysia agreed to go on with the project’s construction, but with a 36% reduction in cost.
