Asean Para Games: Nur Syahidah Alim retains archery gold
SINGAPORE — Former world champion para-archer Nur Syahidah Alim clinched Team Singapore's fifth gold at the Asean Para Games (APG) on Thursday (4 August), as she retained her women's individual compound open in Solo, Indonesia.
The 36-year-old, who reached world No.1 in her event in 2019, led from start to finish in the final to defeat Thailand's Praphaporn Homjanthuek 144-135 at the Kota Barat Stadium.
Her victory comes after gold-medal efforts in the past few days by para-swimmers Colin Soon, Sophie Soon and Wong Zhi Wei, as well as Diroy Noordin in the shot put.
For Syahidah, it is a return to winning form, after an early elimination at last year's Tokyo Paralympics while ranked at world No.2.
"I feel very happy about the result. Today’s match was a little challenging with the wind, it’s pretty tricky, like playing with my heart," she said after her win on Thursday.
"I do feel a little bit of pressure especially since it’s been quite a while since the last APG. But with the help of my coach and my team they remind me to be calm and cool and focus on what I need to do during the shoot."
Sein Phawt of Myanmar won the bronze after edging Phannibha Srathongmaew of Thailand by scoring a 10 in the shoot-off after the match was tied at 134-all after five ends.
