Bayern Munich vs PSG - LIVE!

PSG know they have to win tonight at the Allianz Arena if they are to get past Bayern Munich and keep their hopes of Champions League glory alive. Bayern have a 1-0 lead after the first-leg of the last-16 tie, with Kingsley Coman once again delivering against his former side.

The Bundesliga leaders will fancy their chances of completing the job, with it now well over a year since they were last beaten on home soil. Bayern are without Benjamin Pavard though, after the Frenchman was sent off late on in Paris, though Sadio Mane is on the bench and could play some part.

The Champions League is the competition that matters above all else for PSG, but they are facing a fifth exit at the last-16 stage in the last seven seasons. While Kylian Mbappe is fully fit and starts for the visitors, Neymar is out and set to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury in a huge blow. PSG suffered more Champions League disappointment as Bayern’s professional display earned a 2-0 second-leg win at the Allianz Arena and sent them through to the quarter-finals.

Christophe Galtier’s PSG side arrived in Munich trailing 1-0 after defeat at the Parc des Princes, knowing they had to end Bayern’s long unbeaten run on home soil if they were to avoid a fifth last-16 exit in seven years.

The tie was still firmly in the balance after a goalless 45 minutes, but Eric Choupo-Moting, having had one goal chalked off, did finally get himself on the scoresheet and Serge Gnabry put the finishing touches on a job well done late on, sealing a comfortable 3-0 aggregate win.

Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi were unable to have an impact for PSG as the visitors struggled to make an impact, marking it down as another season in which the club’s all-star ensemble have failed to deliver the craved European success.

Reaction from PSG defender Danilo

22:07 , Matt Verri

“Unfortunately, Bayern were too strong. We had chances in the first half, we didn’t take them, and in the Champions League, that makes things difficult.

“It’s tough to go out like this, but that’s the Champions League.

“Bayern are a physical team, they win lots of duels. We lost too many tonight, and that made things tough. I don’t have words.”

Familiar failings

Ruthless from Bayern...

21:57 , Matt Verri

FT: Bayern 2-0 PSG (agg 3-0)

21:54 , Matt Verri

Bayern march on! Every chance they go all the way in Europe this season.

More last-16 disappointment for PSG, another miserable exit for them. That team should be producing much, much more.

OFFSIDE!

21:53 , Matt Verri

Mane very nearly gets himself on the scoresheet, but he’s denied by the offside flag.

Inches offside. Bayern running riot now - that bench of Sane, Gnabry, Mane and Cancelo is absolutely ridiculous.

21:51 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Five minutes added on.

Bayern are flooding forward, they want more goals. PSG just about avoiding falling apart. They’ve been really disappointing tonight... again.

GOAL! Bayern 2-0 PSG | Serge Gnabry 89'

21:48 , Matt Verri

JOB. DONE.

Verratti loses it deep in the Bayern half, and the hosts are straight on the counter.

Cancelo drives forward, too quick for Zaire-Emery, slides the pass through to Gnabry and he seals the victory.

21:46 , Matt Verri

87 mins: Heads dropping for PSG, as passes are misplaced. Have the look of a team that know their race is run.

Mbappe and Messi, along with most of their team-mates, have been really disappointing. Is this Mbappe’s chance... nope.

Davies with a superb block to stop the Frenchman getting a shot away.

21:43 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Muller pokes the ball away from Ramos as the whistle is blown, centre-back responds by shoving the German over. Both with a smile after the fun and games.

Messi slides a pass through to Zaire-Emery, takes too long to get a shot away and Upamecano gets across brilliantly.

21:41 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Mane on for Musiala, huge roar for him as he makes his return from injury.

Corner is swung in deep, again Ramos gets up well but this time it’s just wide. He’s such a threat from those set-pieces.

21:40 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Mbappe deeper and deeper, wider and wider trying to get on the ball. He drives forward and wins a corner for PSG. Starting to feel like now or never.

Vitinha off now for PSG, Ekitike the man brought on. Bernat also on for Mendes.

21:37 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Vitinha with a needless foul, Kimmich happy to make the most out of that and tick away a few more seconds. Mbappe and Messi struggling to get a touch now.

For the third time since coming on, Sane is away in behind. Once more though his touch is poor.

21:34 , Matt Verri

75 mins: This is becoming ragged from PSG. Going more and more direct, but there’s nobody up for it to work.

Space opening up for Bayern, Sane gets a shot away as he slips and it’s comfortably wide. Should probably have passed it before that.

PSG change. Ruiz off for the visitors, Zaire-Emery on.

21:31 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Hakimi away down the right, Mbappe the only man in the middle and the wing-back can’t pick him out.

Galtier has to be braver than this. PSG have 20 minutes or so to find two goals or they’re out, got nothing to lose now. Get every attacker you have on the pitch!

21:28 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Messi has a shot blocked on the edge of the box and Bayern are away on the break.

Sane leads the charge, looks to slide a pass through to Coman but Mendes gets back really well to turn it behind.

21:26 , Matt Verri

67 mins: We have entered the ‘I’m going to do this myself’ period from Mbappe. Desperate times, he’s starting to shoot from everywhere. Very tight angle, Sommer down to keep it out.

Sane on for Bayern, replacing Choupo-Moting. Mane and Gnabry still waiting on the bench, decent options to have.

21:24 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Great save! Ramos up at the back post from the corner, connects well with the header but Sommer is up to the task to tip it behind.

Another corner, which PSG take shot and ten seconds later pass all the way back to the goalkeeper. So poor.

21:22 , Matt Verri

63 mins: This has been the point in recent seasons when the wheels have really come off for PSG. Have not been very good at halting the slide when things start to go wrong.

Mbappe gets in down the left, stands a cross up and wins a corner for his side.

GOAL! Bayern 1-0 PSG | Eric Choupo-Moting 61'

21:20 , Matt Verri

PSG have huge problems now!

Verratti has had an absolute nightmare. Edge of his own box, caught on the ball and Bayern are in. Goretzka so calm, squares it for Choupo-Moting and he has a tap-in.

21:18 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Goretzka tries his luck from miles out, gets a slick deflection and Bayern will have a corner.

PSG starting to get to the time where they have to throw caution to the wind. They need to find a goal from somewhere, not to going to happen if they sit back and just hope Mbappe can beat the Bayern defence.

21:15 , Matt Verri

56 mins: This match is starting to heat up, temperatures rising.

Mendes is down holding his foot, home fans furious as Bayern kick it out to let him receive some treatment. The two managers look to be clashing on the touchline too.

NO GOAL!

21:12 , Matt Verri

This one does not count!

Choupo-Moting was onside, Muller doesn’t seem to touch it at the back post but VAR has decided that he played a role in flicking a foot out. Seems a strange decision.

PSG survive.

GOAL! Bayern 1-0 PSG | Eric Choupo-Moting 52'

21:11 , Matt Verri

BAYERN TAKE THE LEAD!

This one counts! Choupo-Moting flicks a header into the far corner from Musiala’s cross, Bayern in real control now.

21:10 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Brilliant run from Musiala, takes his time before sliding a pass through to Choupo-Moting. The forward takes far too long to get the shot away, eventually goes to ground under a challenge from Danilo. No penalty.

To cap off a very special ten seconds for Choupo-Moting, he then perfectly blocks Kimmich’s shot.

21:08 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Good chance for PSG to break, they have a lot of space with Goretzka down in the other half of the pitch.

Messi looks to flick it through for Ruiz, gets it all wrong for once. PSG stay on the attack, Mbappe has an effort blocked and when it comes back to him, he plays a lovely pass... straight to a red shirt.

21:05 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Mukiele, who came on for Marquinhos late in the first-half, is off at the break. Quick night for him. Bitshiabu the latest man brought on in defence.

That is not the end of the pitch that PSG will want the focus on this half, though...

Back underway!

21:03 , Matt Verri

Up and running again in Munich. Huge 45 minutes for both sides coming up.

21:00 , Matt Verri

The stats are all very even so far. PSG with 52% possession, four shots each in the opening 45 minutes.

Fairly cagey from both - PSG have to really go for it at some point if it stays like this. That will suit Bayern, so the goals could well still come.

That is not a promise...

What was Sommer thinking...

20:52 , Matt Verri

HT: Bayern 0-0 PSG (agg 1-0)

20:47 , Matt Verri

Goalless after 45 minutes of the second leg. That suits Bayern.

PSG have been the better side and had the better chances, but nothing to show for it. Mbappe and Messi not quite as involved as the visitors would like.

It’s still right in the balance though.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: That Bayern defence is surely going to get caught out at some point. Messi has space to look up, play the ball over the top and Mbappe is very nearly in. Sommer able to come out and claim.

Match is opening up a bit, Musiala has an effort blocked at the otehr end. And now here come PSG again... Goretzka back to halt Messi’s progress.

20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Ramos with a mistake this time, Goretzka pounces and drives forward.

Comes to Davies, skips into the box on his left foot and plays the ball across the face of goal, turned behind for a Bayern corner.

20:39 , Matt Verri

38 mins: OFF THE LINE! SENSATIONAL FROM DE LIGT!

Sommer with a howler in goal, caught on the ball and it’s an open goal for Vitinha. Not enough power on the effort, De Ligt can get back and slide in, hacking it away on the line. Shambles from Sommer.

20:37 , Matt Verri

36 mins: And Marquinhos will have to go off, that is a blow for the visitors. Doesn’t look to have come from any contact.

Mukiele is stripped off on the touchline, he’ll be coming on straight away. Fairly big game for him to replace the captain...

Mbappe now has the armband for PSG.

20:35 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Bayern far more aggressive now in the press, PSG struggling to pass their way through it. Hosts have decided to start playing all of a sudden.

Donnarumma closed down and punts the ball straight out of play. Bigger problem for PSG is that Marquinhos is down holding his side.

20:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: I’m sure we were promised goals. A 0-0 was very much not what we signed up for.

Bayern having their best spell of the match, though that’s not saying much. They’ve worked out that Mbappe and Messi can’t threaten if they don’t have the ball.

Musiala gets a shot away, good save to keep it out. Much better from the hosts.

20:30 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Bayern settling things down after that scare, knocking the ball around well.

Been a fairly passive display from them so far, happy to let PSG have possession on the whole. Feels a risky strategy.

20:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: PSG almost take the lead!

Ruiz is in behind, cuts it back for Messi and his effort is blocked. Falls for him again, and he looks to have about three swings at the ball from close range before Sommer falls on it. Bayern just about survive.

20:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: PSG well on top at the moment, starting to get things going in attack. Mbappe a constant threat when PSG work the ball into the final third.

Bayern happy enough to sit back on their lead for now, not hugely ambitious. They are, however, very keen to foul Messi. Goretzka the latest to leave him on the floor.

20:20 , Matt Verri

20 mins: De Ligt absolutely clatters into Messi, advantage played as the space is there for PSG.

Ball clipped over the top, Mbappe is in but once again it’s a fairly awful touch. Keeps it in play just about, but can only fire the ball into the side-netting.

20:19 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Hakimi involved again, knocks the ball off Davies and wins a corner for PSG.

Up come the defenders, for what proves to be a wasted trip. Messi loops the corner straight into the arms of Sommer.

20:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: First Bayern shot of the night, Kimmich tries his luck from distance and it’s an easy enough save.

At the other end of the pitch, Hakimi makes a great run down the right but the ball from Vitinha is well overhit. Not great quality from either side so far, you’d have to say.

20:16 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Danilo with a shriek heard across Europe as he launches himself into the air. Referee could not have less interest.

Bayern carry on, Kimmich clips the ball into the PSG box but it’s headed out. Believe it or not, Danilo has recovered.

20:14 , Matt Verri

13 mins: PSG are looking for that quick ball to Mbappe when they win it back, forcing things a bit too much though.

Musiala looks the brightest Bayern player in forward areas so far, a couple of decent bursts. That’s about as good as it’s got.

Long ball again to Mbappe, who bundles into Sommer. Free-kick for the goalkeeper, as Mbappe knocks the ball into the empty net.

20:11 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Messi challenged by Kimmich, gets it back a few seconds later and Muller comes sliding in. Bayern very keen to stop the World Cup winner getting on the ball in space.

Relatively low-key start to the match, apart from that early Mbappe chance. Neither side looking too threatening yet.

20:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Mbappe looks to skip past Upamecano, takes a heavy touch and decides to just fall over instead. Allianz crowd less than impressed.

Think Mbappe realised on his way down that was entirely pointless, didn’t even bother to appeal for a free-kick.

20:06 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Not sure Messi has had a touch yet. Don’t think he’s even left the centre circle. Not wasting too much energy, it would be fair to say.

Bayern starting to grow into the match, seeing plenty of the ball. Not doing anything with it yet though.

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Looks like a back three from Bayern, Coman at wing-back as the hosts match up PSG.

First chance for the visitors to break, Mbappe is away down the left. Alarming amount of space from a Bayern perspective. Heavy touch from Mbappe, makes it a tight angle and the shot is comfortable for Sommer.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We are up and running in Munich. Could be an absolute classic.

Teams are out...

19:58 , Matt Verri

Players make the absolute trek through the tunnel and out onto the pitch. No need for a warm-up really.

We’ve seen PSG fall apart, to put it politely, in second legs in recent years when things have started to go badly. Focus has swiftly turned at times to just kicking people.

They’ll be hoping for something a bit more positive tonight.

Five minute warning!

19:55 , Matt Verri

Not long now...

19:48 , Matt Verri

Just under ten minutes to go until kick-off in Munich.

PSG have produced some better displays in recent weeks, with that 3-5-2 shape giving them a bit more solidity and also providing the freedom for Mbappe and Messi to shine.

This is a huge test though - few teams more confident than Bayern.

More to come tonight?

19:44 , Matt Verri

Disappointment for Cancelo...

19:38 , Matt Verri

Joao Cancelo has to settle for a place on the bench tonight, even with Benjamin Pavard being out suspended.

The full-back joined Bayern in January on loan from Manchester City having struggled for minutes under Pep Guardiola since the World Cup, so swapping one bench for another certainly wasn’t the plan.

PSG must end poor record

19:29 , Matt Verri

This would be a fifth last-16 exit in the Champions League in seven seasons for PSG. Not really what their owners are looking for.

Neymar’s absence has made their task an even more difficult one, but should they knock Bayern out tonight, they’ll be one of the favourites to lift the trophy in June.

Big stakes.

Nagelsmann: Both teams are similar

19:24 , Matt Verri

“We all want to go very far in the Champions League, but it also always comes down to form on the day with heavyweights like Bayern and PSG,” the Bayern boss said.

“Both teams are at a similar level in terms of individual players. Both have top stars in their ranks. But our group has a very good feeling of being there for each other and giving everything.”

 (AFP via Getty Images)

PSG have done it before

19:17 , Matt Verri

PSG have to win tonight if they’re to go through, simple as that.

Bad news for them is that Bayern have lost just one of their last 17 matches at home in the Champions League. The good news? PSG were that team to beat.

It was the first leg of a quarter-final tie three years ago, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice in a 3-2 win in Germany. More of the same and we’ve got a very fun night ahead.

Bayern in the building...

19:10 , Matt Verri

Galtier: We have Mbappe

19:03 , Matt Verri

No prizes for guessing who PSG boss Christophe Galtier is hoping will step up tonight for the Ligue 1 side. Over to you, Kylian...

“We need to play more football than we did in the first leg,” Galtier said.

“We have a gameplan and we have Kylian. He gives us more scope to get in behind. We must also win the ball back much faster.”

Bayern with the advantage at halfway stage

18:54 , Matt Verri

It was a strange first leg in Paris. Bayern were completely dominant for the majority of the match, as Coman once again came back to haunt PSG and give the visitors a deserved lead.

And then Mbappe came on. And Bayern froze. The Frenchman ran them ragged in his time on the pitch, twice having the ball in the net but neither counted.

If that’s a sign of things to come, Bayern have real problems.

Teams are in...

18:48 , Matt Verri

Stanisic gets the nod for Bayern over Cancelo, while Coman once against starts against his former side. Scored in the Champions League final against PSG and in the first leg in Paris last month - decent record.

Mane is on the bench for the hosts, along with Gnabry and Sane, so Bayern not short of options.

For PSG, Mbappe and Messi up front. Shock. Vitinha and Ruiz behind them, while it looks to be a back three of Danilo, Ramos and Marquinhos.

That looks to be a team full of players very much ready to kick off if things go badly for PSG tonight...

Nagelsmann lays out Bayern tactics

18:23 , Matt Verri

Julian Nagelsmann has warned his Bayern side that they have to avoid giving Lionel Messi space to exploit tonight.

With Mbappe set to start, there will be a real threat from the visitors on the counter and Bayern’s high-line could certainly be vulnerable.

Nagelsmann said: “Paris have a clear identity and habits that you can exploit, but they can hit you on the counter if you get it wrong.

“We need to avoid taking too long to settle into the game. One job we have will be to avoid having too much space behind our back line. It will be important to cut off passes to [Lionel] Messi and to keep him from changing direction.”

Mbappe: Future not linked to Champions League

18:14 , Matt Verri

Kylian Mbappe has insisted he will not makes decisions over his future solely on tonight’s results.

The Frenchman has regularly been linked with a move away from the PSG, particularly to Real Madrid, and more rumours can be expected in the summer.

“If I linked my future to the Champions League, without wishing to show a lack of respect to the club, I would have left a long time ago,” said Mbappe.

“I don’t think this match will have an impact. I am here and I am very happy to be here. I am not thinking about anything other than making PSG successful.”

Standard Sport prediction

17:57 , Matt Verri

Mbappe’s return obviously complicates matters for Bayern, who looked terrified when the Frenchman came off the bench in the first leg.

However, they should have enough to get the job done tonight. Leading already and backed by home support, there is enough quality to hurt this relatively fragile PSG team.

Bayern to win, 2-1.

PSG team news

17:51 , Matt Verri

For PSG, Neymar is the headline absence after the Brazilian had his season ended byan ankle injury. Presnel Kimpembe and Renato Sanches are also injured.

After missing much of the first leg, however, Kylian Mbappe looks certain to start and it will be down to him and Lionel Messi to fire PSG into the quarter-finals.

Bayern team news

Benjamin Pavard is absent for Bayern Munich after he was sent off late in the first leg.

Manuel Neuer remains a long-term absentee, although Sadio Mane is now available. In Pavard’s place, Josip Stanisic could start in a back three for the German champions as Julian Nagelsmann attempts to halt the looming threat of Kylian Mbappe.

Predicted Bayern Munich XI: Sommer; Stanisic, Upamecano, De Ligt; Coman, Kimmich, Goretzka, Davies; Muller, Musiala; Choupo-Moting
