The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has suspended Sentosa’s Sky Tower after a system malfunction left 39 people stranded in the gondola in mid-air for more than four hours on Saturday afternoon (12 Aug).

The ride will re-open after the authority concludes its investigations and approves it for “safe operations”, said director of the Sky Tower Alexander Melchers to TODAY.

A check by Yahoo News Singapore on the Sky Tower website on Monday also indicated that operations were “currently suspended until further notice”.

The glitch occurred at around 5.35pm and the Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at 7.10pm.

BCA also sent its engineers to the scene.

SCDF sent two fire engines, two rescue tenders and an ambulance to the scene, as well as members from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART).

No one was injured when the cabin was brought to the ground at abut 9.45pm, said SCDF.

According to media reports, Melchers told media at the scene that ride maintenance had been carried out by Sky Tower engineers on the morning of the day the incident occurred. He added that the maintenance regime was “strict” and that the cause of the incident had not yet been identified.
