Benjamin Browns: Singapore Milkshake Review

“Shake it off! Shake it off!”

One can find Benjamin Browns cafe tucked in the corner of the ground level of Forum The Shopping Mall just off of Orchard Road.

Its black color scheme and relative small scale can be overpowered by the sprawling spaces and bright lights of the nearby big chain restaurants, but just keep your eyes peeled for the tables of smiling patrons taking endless photos of their over the top shakes and cakes and you have arrived at Benjamin Browns.

Benjamin Browns offers a full menu of food items (soups, sandwiches, pasta, burgers and more), but today we were here for one thing and one thing only – their handcrafted over the top milkshakes.

Every shake begins with a vanilla ice cream base, imported from New Zealand. From there, Benjamin Browns lovingly adds in their own flavors giving each shake its unique taste and flavor. Benjamin Browns proudly crafts their shakes with only fresh frozen purees and never uses any artificial sweeteners. Each shake also includes an on-theme slice of cake made in their Pandan Loop central kitchen.

Currently, Benjamin Browns offers eight creamy shakes on the menu, with three new creations soon to be permanently added. Each of their shakes are available in both traditional and over the top forms. Obviously, we opted for everything over the top that’s so in vogue at the moment.

Coffee & Avocado ($16.00)

Being their top seller, we started off our milkshake endeavor with the coffee and avocado creation. The base shake is made with both coffee and avocado flavors. The addition of the avocado gives the shake an extremely mild flavor. On the top you will find layers of fresh sliced avocado, sugar dusted crackers, wafers and a moist coffee cake. The final creation is topped with whipped cream and a dusting of coffee grounds.

This shake seems to have a polarizing effect of people. Simply, you either love it, or you hate it. Personally, I love all things coffee. I love all things avocado. Marry them together? That’s not for me. It’s still been a hit with other locals though, so give it a shot to find out your preference.

Peanut Butter & Jelly ($16.00)

If there is a peanut butter shake on the menu, most of the time that is going to be my order. This shake has a wonderful, yet very sweet, peanut butter base and is topped with layers of sweetened strawberries, crackers and whipped cream. But wait, there’s more – once at your table your server will add a sprinkling of sweet, sticky popping candy to the top.

On a normal day, this particular cake does not come with the standard slice of cake, but instead sugar doughnuts. Unfortunately for us, they were out of doughnuts that day. Of all the over the top shakes we tried, the peanut butter and jelly shake had the sweetest overall taste.

Nutella & Banana ($16.00)

The base shake here is banana flavored and topped with a moist wedge of Nutella cake, fresh banana slices, wafers and pretzels. I am always a fan of when bananas and chocolate come together and this shake was no exception. The sweet, salty and chocolatey flavors came together nicely in the match made in heaven.

Tim Tam ($16.00)

Hello, gorgeous. The Tim Tam shake is a beast with towering layers of Tim Tam cookies, direct from Australia, and a decadent double chocolate walnut brownie stuffed in for added goodness. Minus the artificial taste of the red velvet flavored Tim Tam’s, this shake was our favorite of the day.

The chocolate-based shake had the best overall flavor and texture of all the shakes we tried. The gooey center of the Tim Tam’s and the rich brownie bites were a major bonus to this exaggerated chocolate endeavor.

Thai Milk Tea ($16.00)

Coming soon. We were lucky enough to be the first to try this new creation from Benjamin Browns – the Thai milk tea inspired shake. If you are a fan of the classic Thai milk tea taste, the flavor of this shake is spot on.

The shake is topped with a refreshing spoonful of coconut ice cream, a generous slice of Thai milk tea cake and finished with speckles of the classic Thai dessert – red ruby sago.

Even with a varied food menu, people are flocking to Benjamin Browns for their over the top shakes. I can attest to the fact that these shakes are not just Instagram-worthy, but are well thought out and carefully crafted from top to bottom with your tastebuds in mind.

I would return to Benjamin Browns next time I am craving a sinful treat. But not until I work off the five massive milkshakes I just had…

Expected damage: $14.00 – $16.00
