3 best salad bars in Singapore

By Min Yan

In a world where the presentation of food is almost an art in itself, the humble salad is one of the only dishes that could get away with being a haphazardly tossed bed of greens, nuts, meat, cheeses and dressing, and be considered a gourmet meal on its own.

Yet, there's something so alluring about the simple salad — light on the palate, easy on the waistline and heavy on the health benefits — that makes it the perfect lunchtime option for healthy eating, especially in hot summer weather.

We check out three salad bars that have made it their business to elevate the green salad into an art form.

The Green Bar

There isn't much room for choice at The Green Bar — only 10 salad mixes are available, and you don't get to build your own — but the beautifully presented and tasty home-made creations are definitely worth your lunch hour.

The Smoked Duck Surprise (S$10.50) will satisfy those who prefer their salads a little heartier, as slices of warm smoked duck with balsamic vinegar are served on top of a bed of cold greens and roasted pumpkin chunks and rosemary potatoes.

Mescluns

You know your salad is in good hands when the salad bar is lead by a French-trained executive chef Christophe Crot, who has previously worked at some of the finest establishments in the world, including The Pierre in New York.

Build your own salad from fresh greens and extras such as fried wanton skins and Cajun-spiced prawns, or take your pick from one of the many custom-made salads. The ever-popular Chicken & Pasta salad (S$9.50) is our favourite, hitting the spot with crunchy broccoli, penne and generous slices of herb chicken, without the inevitable post-lunch stupor.

Salad Stop

One of the fastest growing chains in Singapore, Salad Stop! is now an ubiquitous sight in the Central Business District.

The snaking lines of health nuts out at the many locations' doors during lunch hour aren't a huge surprise considering the sheer variety of dressings and ingredients on offer (50+ ingredients and 18 dressings last we checked). The business' success is not only a reflection of the dish's popularity, but also of father-son duo Daniel and Adrien Desbaillets' creative business skills when they saw Singapore's need for salads with a twist.
