OLDTOWN White Coffee (OLDTOWN) is teaming up with renowned Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic to create the ‘Art of OLDTOWN’, a celebration of the heritage and history that is shared between Ipoh, Old Town and OLDTOWN White Coffee, the true white coffee manufacturer in Malaysia. In conjunction with this collaboration, Zacharevic will use his unique artistic creativity to paint seven murals to celebrate Ipoh, Old Town, the birthplace of white coffee.

OLDTOWN has grown to become the leading white coffee manufacturer in Malaysia ever since the company introduced its own 3-in-1 products back in 1999. This success is firmly rooted in the proud coffee tradition and culture that has made Ipoh, Old Town so iconic. OLDTOWN remains true to its heritage, providing only the most authentic flavor and nostalgic aroma to Malaysians all over the country.

Mr. Lee Siew Heng, Group Managing Director of OLDTOWN Berhad said, “Our white coffee is prepared using an original recipe which has been passed down through the generations. Although we have grown so much over the years, the key secret to our success is our ability to maintain the originality and authenticity of the white coffee recipe. We also preserve the traditions and practices that have played such an important role in the shaping of Ipoh, Old Town’s coffee culture. With mutual heritage and history between OLDTOWN and white coffee, it is indeed very timely for us to celebrate Ipoh, Old Town, where it all began.”

“We are truly excited to partner with Ernest as he is one of the most distinguished artists at the moment. His ideas and creativity will create iconic art murals that celebrate the birthplace of the true white coffee in Malaysia. In fact, back in April this year, Ernest painted one mural in Jalan Bijih Timah as a teaser to this project.”

Malaysians have a well-documented love affair with coffee. In an online poll conducted by I.M. magazine, over 80% of respondents identified themselves as coffee drinkers. Around 43.8% of the respondents claimed that they could not go without a cup of coffee for a week while the same percentage of respondents also claimed to consume between 2-3 cups of coffee per day. 1

It is interesting to note that while there has been an influx of gourmet coffees coming into the Malaysia market, over 35% of respondents still prefer white and local coffee when making a cup of coffee at home. This goes to show that despite the growing diversity within the coffee consuming audiences, the classic, local Malaysian coffee culture is still thriving and popular; something that is uniquely ours to own. 1

Inspired by the local coffee culture of Ipoh, Old Town in particular, Zacharevic is eager to add seven more art murals at locations around Ipoh, Old Town. In line with the ‘Art of OLDTOWN’ campaign, each art piece will draw inspiration from the elements from the birthplace of white coffee, OLDTOWN and their shared origins.

Zacharevic had this to say, “Ever since I first visited Ipoh, Old Town I’ve been touched by how cozy and intimate the town is. Its architecture, culture, food and people have continued to captivate and inspire my heart and soul. I’ve wanted to come back to Ipoh, Old Town, take my time, soak in its rich culture and heritage and perhaps leave my mark here. I was truly honored and amazingly excited when OLDTOWN approached me to make this a reality.”

“Whenever I meet someone from Ipoh, Old Town, I am amazed by how humble yet proud people are of their hometown. I share the exact same feeling when I get to know OLDTOWN. They have grown so successfully, yet never neglected its roots, heritage and most importantly the people who helped it succeed. I am really proud to collaborate with OLDTOWN White Coffee to bring my artwork to Ipoh, Old Town and hope to make this beautiful place even more inspiring than it already is now.”
