A passenger bus plunged into a ravine after leaving a Malaysian island resort, killing a British man and injuring 40 others, including 19 Singaporeans, police said Monday.

The chartered bus bound for neighbouring Singapore lost control and skidded, falling into the 10-metre-deep (33 feet) ravine in the east coast state of Pahang on Sunday, district police chief Yahaya Othman said.

A Malaysia Airlines flight heading to India with 166 people aboard made an emergency landing in Kuala Lumpur early Monday after it was forced to turn back when a tire burst upon takeoff, the airline said.

The airline said Flight 192 to Bangalore in southern India landed safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 1:56 am (1756 GMT) Monday, about four hours after it departed.

A robotic submarine continued on Monday scouring a desolate patch of silt-covered seafloor in the Indian Ocean for any trace of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

The unmanned sub has spent nearly a week searching for the plane's black boxes and has covered about two-thirds of its focused search area. But it has yet to uncover any clues that could shed light on the plane's mysterious disappearance.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

The boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport Sunday morning with no identification, Simon said.
