BMI Celebrates ‘Game of Thrones’ Composer Ramin Djawadi With Icon Honor at Annual Film and TV Awards
“Game of Thrones” composer Ramin Djawadi was honored with the BMI Icon Award at Broadcast Music Inc.’s 40th annual Film, TV and Visual Media Awards Wednesday night in Beverly Hills.
The Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated composer was acknowledged for his “memorable scores and themes inspiring future generations of composers,” BMI president-CEO Mike O’Neill said in presenting the award.

Djawadi’s music for “Game of Thrones” became a sensation during the HBO fantasy series’ eight-season run, which concluded in 2019. He won two Emmys, for his music in the seventh and eighth seasons, and later conducted it with symphony orchestras and choirs during world tours in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
His other television credits include “Westworld,” “Prison Break” and the current fantasy and sci-fi series “House of the Dragon,” “3 Body Problem” and “Fallout.” Among his film credits are “Iron Man,” “Eternals,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Pacific Rim,” and he has also contributed music to such video game franchises as “Medal of Honor” and “Gears of War.”
Paying tribute to Djawadi via video clips were producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (“Game of Thrones”), Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (“Westworld”), Charles Roven (“Batman Begins”) and Ryan Condal (“House of the Dragon”); director Ava Duvernay (“Wrinkle in Time”); rock guitarist Tom Morello; and “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin.
The BMI Icon award is the performing-rights society’s highest honor. Previous recipients include John Williams, Thomas Newman, Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, Terence Blanchard, Alan Silvestri and Mychael Danna.
Also honored at the black-tie, invitation-only event were composers of the year’s top-grossing films, top-rated prime time network series, and highest ranking cable and streaming media programs.
Present to collect film awards were Andrew Wyatt (“Barbie”), Brian Tyler (“Super Mario Bros. Movie”), John Murphy (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Harry Gregson-Williams (“Meg 2: The Trench”) and Jongnic Bontemps (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”).
Composers of streaming shows honored included Sherri Chung (“Based on a True Story “), Tom Howe (“Ted Lasso”), Chris Bacon (“Wednesday”), Carlos Rafael Rivera (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Blake Neely (“You”) and Kevin, Deana and Sean Kiner (“Ahsoka”).
Network program winners included Sean Callery (“Accused”), Atli Örvarsson (“Chicago Fire,” “FBI”), Mike Post (“Law & Order”), Kurt Farquhar (“The Neighborhood”) and Fil Eisler (“Fire Country”).
A new category, music for video games, featured honorees Stephen Barton (“Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”), Inon Zur (“Starfield”), Ted Reedy (“Diablo IV”) and the team of Chuck E. Myers “Sea” and J. Scott Rakozy (“Hogwarts Legacy”).
