Luxury house Dior showed the Fall 2023 show at the historic site of the Gateway of India in Mumbai on 30th March to great fanfare.
For designer Maria Grazia Chiuri, each collection is an opportunity to make new connections between different domains of craftsmanship, ancestral traditions, and the most ground-breaking innovation. This venue is also especially important as it is located right across the Maison's brand store at Taj Mahal Hotel and is a tribute to the visionary spirit of Christian Dior and his successors, who deeply admired this country.

Maria's work collaboration and her ties to India can be traced back to her friendship with Karishma Swali, who directs the Chanakya Atelier and the Chanakya School of Craft, in Mumbai. The school is a place of exchange, study, and emancipation for many women to explore different types of savoir-faire that the Creative Director of Dior women’s lines has long celebrated, highlighting thus the visionary spirit of the founding-couturier.
The archives reveal Dior models created by Marc Bohan, the then Artistic Director, who travelled to India in April 1962, notably to Mumbai and Delhi, initiating conversation between France and India. For Marc Bohan, these presentations were significant events, heralding a new departure under his artistic direction: younger customers, and a more dynamic, contemporary approach to fashion and ready-to-wear.
Maria has chosed colour palettes and materials for this collection that crystalised key influences shared with Karishma Swali of Chanakya.
