Bridgerton star Bessie Carter has landed her next TV role in new drama Outrageous.

Written and created by Sarah Williams from Mary Lovell's biography The Mitford Girls, the six-part series tells the true story behind the frivolity of the six Mitford daughters.

The show, which is now filming in Buckinghamshire, explores what drove a group of strong-minded sisters to forge their own paths in the 1930s. It also looks at their standing in aristocratic society, and the political divides that opened up across the family.

Carter, who plays Prudence Featherington in the hit Netflix series, is set to star as social butterfly Nancy Mitford.

"Outrageous is the story of six aristocratic sisters who refused to play by the rules, their often-scandalous lives making headlines around the world," reads the official logline for the series.

"Set against the gathering storm clouds of the 1930s, masked by the decadence, frivolity and lavishness of British high society, Outrageous will bring the full, uncensored story of the Mitford sisters to the screen for the first time.

"A story of family bonds, betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, love, heartache and even imprisonment – a family saga like no other, this is the Mitfords as they really were: unapologetic, outrageous and utterly human."

Supporting cast members include Carter's Bridgerton co-star Calam Lynch as Diana's first husband, the novelist Bryan Guinness. Love Is in the Air's Joshua Sasse has been cast as Diana's second husband, the fascist politician Oswald Mosley, while Jamie Blackley (Becoming Elizabeth) plays Nancy's husband Peter Rodd.

"She was one piece of a truly fascinating family of remarkable and unique women, and I can't wait to tell their story."

Production company Firebird Pictures added: "We couldn't be more excited about the stunning cast we've assembled to breathe life into this epic tale of sibling rivalry and political radicalisation."
