Manchester United’s progress or lack of in the transfer market continues to provide an unwanted distraction for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But progress on the pitch is slowing evidently, meaning the Carabao Cup is key for convincing the squad that they can brush off a sluggish start to the season.

After escaping from the Amex with a victory thanks to late VAR drama, United will hope to put in a performance that gives them a better chance of winning more comfortably here.

Graham Potter’s side will be confident that they can unsettle their opponents though, despite late heartache.

After 10 changes for the previous round, expect changes again from Solskjaer, with Harry Maguire retained last time and likely to remain here too. Dean Henderson, Juan Mata and Eric Bailly look sure to come in, while Daniel James and Odion Ighalo may get some game time, despite uncertainty over their futures. Brandon Williams, Donny van de Beek, Fred and Jesse Lingard could come in too.

Phil Jones is still out with a knee problem, while Axel Tuanzebe has a foot problem still. Sergio Romero is away due to personal reasons.

Predicted line-ups

Brighton: Steele; Veltman, Burn, Roberts, Bernardo, Propper, Sanders; Jahanbakhsh, Gross, Mac Allister; Gyokeres

United: Henderson; Fosu-Mensah, Bailly, Maguire, Williams; Fred, McTominay; Mata, Van de Beek, Lingard; Ighalo

Odds

Draw: 3/1

United: 17/20

Prediction

United have better depth, as well as a hunger among the squad to prove their worth as Solskjaer whittles down his squad in the final days of the window. Brighton’s motivation and approach should ensure a lively game though and we’ll lean towards revenge for Potter’s side with their priorities gradually shifting away from merely surviving in the Premier League. 3-2 to the Seagulls.
