British Davis Cup timeline

Victory over Belgium in 2015 is the first time Britain wins the Davis Cup in 79 years

British Davis Cup timeline up to the defeat of Belgium on Sunday in the 2015 final: 1936 - Britain win Davis Cup for the ninth time, and the fourth time in a row, thanks to the dominance of Fred Perry, ably backed by Bunny Austin. The following year, however, they lose in the final to the United States and the long wait begins 1978 - Britain finally get back to the Davis Cup final, 42 years after their last win, but Buster Mottram and John Lloyd are no match for John McEnroe who wins both his singles and the doubles to take a 4-1 triumph for the United States. 2010 - British Davis Cup tennis is at its lowest ebb with the country facing the real prospect of relegation to the fourth and lowest division of the competition for the first time. But under new coach Leon Smith, they defeat Turkey to stay at the same level and the revival begins in earnest. 2014 - Britain battle their way into the World Group, mainly due to Andy Murray and reach the quarter-finals before losing to Italy. 2015 - Murray makes himself available for every tie and, backed in the doubles by brother Jamie, storm their way past United States, France and Australia before defeating Belgium in the final, 79 years after the glory days of Fred Perry.
