Busy with Sarawak polls, Seputeh MP releases CNY clip sans satire

After courting controversy over her Chinese New Year satirical video two years ago, DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok is out with her latest clip, but without any satire this time. Posting the 19-second clip on her Facebook page, the Seputeh MP urged the people to unite in the fight against evil. "Unity is strength. Be united in fighting for good and against evil. "Let's make the Year of Monkey a good year for the nation and for all Malaysians," she wrote on her Facebook page in the note accompanying her video clip. In the video, Kok – accompanied by members of her team standing with her and dressed in traditional Chinese costumes – is seen giving a short but enigmatic script in Mandarin with subtitles in Malay which read: Selagi kita bersatu padu, rakyat biasa pun boleh menewaskan kuasa yang paling jahat (As long as we unite, even ordinary citizens can defeat the most notorious power). When asked the reason for her short clip this year, Kok said it was because she was busy with the Sarawak elections. "This year my colleagues and I have decided to do a short video with a simple message, that is, unity is strength and everyone should be united to fight for good and against evils so that the Year of the Monkey will be a good year for all Malaysians. "I am quite busy with my work for Sarawak elections campaign, need to channel my energy in more important issues," she told The Malaysian Insider in a WhatsApp message. Kok was charged under the Sedition Act on May 6, 2014, for her controversial 11-minute satirical clip during Chinese New Year that year, titled “Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014”. The video caused a stir among government supporters who saw it as an affront to Malaysia and its leaders, culminating in violent threats against Kok. She was accused of insulting Malays, the security forces, and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, in the video. Although she had clarified that she was not insulting anyone, she received a barrage of insults and more than 300 police reports were lodged against her. In addition, a coalition of Muslim non-governmental organisations in Kuala Lumpur held a protest, slaughtered two chickens and offered a RM1,200 reward to anyone who slapped her as a sign of their anger towards Pakatan Rakyat leaders for allegedly insulting the Malay leadership and Islam. In November last year, however, Attorney General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali ordered the charge against the lawmaker to be dropped. – February 6, 2016.
