CapitaLand to push Singapore retailers towards e-commerce with Lazada partnership

The announcement is in conjunction with news that the real estate giant will manage Alibaba’s Shanghai headquarters

In an effort to bring its offline stores online, the Southeast Asian real estate giant CapitaLand announced today that it will be bringing the products of its retail clients to the Singapore Lazada e-commerce marketplace (Lazada.sg).

CapitaLand is most well-known as the manager of major malls across Southeast Asia.

By the end of this year, CapitaLand will start aggregating the offerings of shops that have an offline store in their malls and help them get online. Furthermore, people will be able to order online and pick-up the goods in-shop, which provides an alternative option to delivery.

In the beginning, CapitaLand will launch two “click and collect” lounges at the Plaza Singapura and Bugis+ malls.

“As the owner and manager of Singapore’s largest network of shopping malls, we have thus embarked on creating a digital channel that supports our mall tenants in tapping the growth potential of e-commerce,” said Jason Leow, the CEO of CapitaLand Mall Asia in an official statement.

“By leveraging our extensive physical network as a competitive advantage, shoppers will enjoy an additional option of collecting their online purchases in our malls,” he added.

Lazada and CapitaLand said they plan to rapidly scale up the service over the next two years.

A partnership with Alibaba

CapitaLand also announced today a strategic partnership with the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba — who owns Lazada.

The first deliverable of the agreement is a deal in which CapitaLand will manage the Alibaba’s soon-to-be-opened Headquarters in Shanghai. The building includes four office towers and a retail podium. CapitaLand will manage the pre-opening, one of the office towers and the retail centre.
