ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong appeared on MMA journalist Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour” to break the news about ONE: X and three of the event’s accompanying bouts.
Speaking on the show on 15 September, Sityodtong revealed to the MMA world that a special megafight and two ONE World Title bouts would take place at the 10-year anniversary show that is scheduled for December of this year.
The first bout the ONE Chairman and CEO announced will be a special rules megafight between ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon and 12-time Mixed Martial Arts World Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. The bout will alternate between Muay Thai and MMA rules over four rounds.
Helwani asked Sityodtong if it took any convincing on either man’s part to agree to the bout, but the CEO reassured the host that both men agreed within hours. The martial arts world erupted with excitement on social media immediately after the news went public.
In addition to the megafight, ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes will defend his belt against #1-ranked John “Hands of Stone” Lineker. Lineker is 3-0 in ONE Championship with two KO wins. Fernandes, aside from holding the strap, has been one of the most dominant bantamweights in ONE history.
Lastly, Sityodtong announced an opponent for newly crowned ONE Featherweight World Champion Thanh Le. He’ll be taking on #3-ranked Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon. Le won the belt after knocking out former World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen. Tonon is a multiple-time BJJ World Champion.
Helwani pressed Sityodtong to confirm more fights for the massive event, but the ONE Chairman and CEO would only disclose that Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez may appear on the card as well.
Sityodtong also revealed to Helwani that the organization has plans to promote events in the USA starting in 2022.
ONE Championship started as a Singaporean-based martial arts organization in 2011 but quickly grew into one of the top promotions in the world, having held events throughout Asia.
