Check out Singapore’s newest car ambassador

SINGAPORE — Yasminne Cheng is the latest local celeb to score a free car, thanks to a sponsorship deal that sees her zipping around town in an Audi TT.

The radio personality and host of The 5 Show on MediaCorp’s Channel 5 says she is a fan of the brand, having driven an Audi for seven years before signing on as its local ambassador.

She said in a statement that she felt “drawn to personify” the values of the brand.

Audi Singapore’s managing director Jeff Mannering described her as a “natural fit” for the brand. “As a media personality, she is very versatile, crisscrossing the airwaves and television,” he said in a statement.

Ms Cheng joins a roster of MediaCorp artistes who lend a bit of celebrity sparkle to cars.

In June last year Mercedes-Benz announced Rebecca Lim (below) and Desmond Tan as brand ambassadors, a move seen as an effort to promote its smaller cars to younger drivers.

At the time, Ms Lim described the Mercedes CLA-Class she received as “the perfect combination of style and comfort.”

Elsewhere in the world, celebrity endorsements of cars are common — tennis ace Maria Sharapova is a Porsche ambassador, for example, while Nissan has relied on Usain Bolt to lift its high-performance credentials.

Singapore’s high car prices make the practice rare here, but as the examples above show, where there is star power, free horsepower often follows.
