Dog Carrying Day: Behold the Chinese festival where villagers worship pooches on a throne for one day

Once a year, the people of Jiaobang in China come together to celebrate man’s best friend.

Legend has it that the first villagers were saved from dying of dehydration by a dog that showed them the way to water. Ever since then, the annual celebration has taken place on 12 July to ensure another year of good harvests.

While some think the chains around the dog are a sign of animal cruelty, others are quick to point out that the whole idea is based around pampering the animal, rather than hurting it.
