How to choose the right pair of shoes to ensure healthy feet

Shopping for shoes? Look out for a pair that is comfortable, fits both your feet well and provides sufficient support. The right footwear for the particular shape and size of your feet will protect you from injury and falls, and prevent painful foot problems such as bunions, calluses and corns.

While it’s important to invest in a good pair of shoes, you don’t have to spend lots of money for them to be good. “A high price doesn’t always guarantee the right fit or features,” points out the American Heart Association.

5 tips for buying shoes:

Timing: Experts recommend that you go shopping for shoes in the afternoon or evening since your feet are likely to swell during the day and may even increase by half a shoe size.

Get both your feet measured: Since feet can grow larger and wider with age, you should get both your feet measured every time you shop for shoes. In case one foot is larger than the other, opt for a size that fits the larger foot.

Comfortable cushioning and sturdy soles: Always buy shoes that have strong soles to provide protection from sharp objects and enough cushioning for comfortably walking on hard surfaces.

Space to wriggle your toes: Ensure there is a half-inch (1.25-centimetre) space between the top of your longest toe and the end of the shoe. You need this space because your foot is likely to spread out while you walk. Stand and walk around with the shoe in the store to check that it fits well.

Socks/inserts: If you intend to wear socks and/or inserts with your shoes, take them along to the store. Opt for shoes that fit well with these in place.
