Chris Pine's pitch for “The Princess Diaries 3” involves a time machine

A real Genovian time-space pear-adox

Miracles happen when you believe — and that's probably what it would take to make Chris Pine's idea for The Princess Diaries 3 a reality.

The actor sat down with Entertainment Weekly for our Role Call Youtube series to reminisce about some of his most memorable roles, including his breakout turn as Nicholas Devereaux, a rival for the Genovian throne and unexpected suitor to Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway), in The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement.

But the real question is whether or not Nicholas (who — spoiler — got his happily-ever-after with Mia at the movie's conclusion) would be part of an oft-discussed third film. Pine has some ideas about what it should look like.

Pine does, however, have a very modern director in mind for the project.

"You know, like, what it would be?" he says. "It would be like a Luca Guadagnino film, [he] directs Princess Diaries 3. Now that is f---ing fire."

Maybe Mia and Nicholas can take up tennis...

A third Princess Diaries film is currently in development at Disney, but other details remain scarce. Aadrita Mukerji reportedly will pen the script and franchise producer Debra Martin Chase is set to return. The late Garry Marshall directed the previous two installments, and there's no word yet on who might fill his shoes.

Though no cast has yet been confirmed for the film, Hathaway did recently comment on the sequel.

“We’re in a good place,” she told V magazine. "That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place."

However, Julie Andrews, who starred as Queen Clarisse, Mia's grandmother in the previous two films, told EW back in 2022 that she would likely not return without the late Marshall.
