Coronation Street's DS Swain star reflects on previous role in soap

Coronation Street star Vicky Myers has opened up on her previous role in the ITV soap.

Vicky, whose character DS Swain was recently promoted to a regular character after nearly three years of guest stints, revealed that she worked on Corrie as a "supporting artist" many years ago.

Speaking to TV Times magazine, she said: "I was the nurse when Des Barnes [played by Philip Middlemiss] died in 1998. I was able to watch Denise Welch [who played Des' wife, Natalie], get into the zone, because obviously she had to cry.

"There's no amount of money in the world that can buy you that kind of experience."

On returning to the Cobbles, Vicky said: "To come full circle and to work with David Neilson is really quite something. He's a wonderful human being and utterly captivating. He makes it easy."

Swain has recently been investigating Lauren Bolton's disappearance and believes the teen was murdered.

Lauren's former boss at the cafe, Roy Cropper (Neilson), is the top suspect and upcoming episodes will see him charged and sent to prison on remand.

Vicky knows that Swain is the bad guy in this situation and told TV Times she "purposely" hasn't been out due to fan reaction.

"I've had a fair few messages online – warnings of what people might do to me if they see me, which is highly amusing! It's quite lovely and endearing that people are so heavily invested. Roy is a legacy character and he's well-loved, so it's quite right they should be jumping to his defence."

Vicky also shared that she hopes fans will soon see her character's softer side and revealed that DS Swain's daughter will be introduced to the soap later this year.

The actor added: "I'm looking forward to what's coming up and to the viewers getting to know who Swain really is. It's got to the point where we need to see more. She is the itch I need to scratch."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
