An Indian national was acquitted Friday (9 December) of the charge of molesting his former domestic helper.

Nitin Jaiswal, 44, was on trial at the State Courts for allegedly using criminal force on his Filipino maid by kissing her on the lips and touching her breast at his condominium in Tanjong Rhu Road on February 2015.

Nitin, a senior executive with Bloomberg, denied the allegations and was on trial for 11 days. A report by The Straits Times said that District Judge Salina Ishak pointed out that there were gaps in both the prosecution’s and defence’s case.

However, she said that the burden is always on the prosecution to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court heard that Nitin returned to Singapore from Mumbai, India, on 18 February 2015. The maid, who had been working for Nitin for two years, was alone when her employer returned home. She alleged that Nitin molested her after she had given him a massage.

Nitin left for Melbourne, Australia, to join his family there on 19 February 2015. The 43-year-old maid told a neighbour about the incident on 25 February, a day after Nitin and his family had returned from Australia.

The maid left the apartment three days later, taking along her passport and work permit while the family was not at home. She later lodged a police report, claiming that Nitin had molested her.

Judge Salina said that she did not find the alleged victim’s evidence to be “unusually convincing” due to the inconsistencies in her testimony, the Straits Times report said.
