Singapore confirms 24 new COVID cases, all imported, in highest daily tally since 29 Sept
SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed 24 new COVID-19 cases in Singapore as of Thursday (17 December), taking the country’s total to 58,377.
All 24 cases are imported and no new local transmissions. This is the most number of new single-day cases reported since 29 September, when MOH confirmed 27 cases – nine imported, 17 from the dormitories, and one from the community.
It is also the most number of imported cases reported in a single day since 28 March, when 42 imported cases were reported.
“Amongst the new cases today, 23 are asymptomatic, and were detected from our proactive screening and surveillance, while one was symptomatic,” said the MOH.
Seven of them are Singaporeans and six others are permanent residents who returned from Austria, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the UK.
Another four are work pass or permit holders currently employed in Singapore who arrived from India, Indonesia, and the Maldives.
Five are dependant’s pass holders who arrived from the UK, and one is a student’s pass holder who arrived from India.
The remaining case is a special pass holder who is a crew member of a ship that arrived from Indonesia. He had not disembarked from the ship and was conveyed to the hospital in an ambulance after he developed symptoms.
All of them were either placed on the stay-home notice or isolated upon their arrival here and subsequently tested.
The MOH noted that the number of new cases in the community has remained low, with no new cases in the past week.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Monday that Singapore’s Phase 3 reopening will begin on 28 December as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to ease with a fall in the number of locally transmitted cases.

99% of total cases have recovered
With 14 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Thursday, 58,252 cases – or 99.8 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.
Most of the 33 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, and none are in the intensive care unit.
A total of 63 patients – with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive – are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
Apart from 29 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.
