Telfar, the black-owned US fashion label known for its cult shopping totes, has released a line of luxury durags in an effort to fight discrimination against black hair.

"We set out to make a durag that is meant to be seen. This durag is meant to be a kind of luxury, and our goal, as always, is even more accessibility and ubiquity," designer Telfar Clemens told Interview. "We want to be in every braiding spot, barbershop, and bodega in America."

The durag is a symbol of black hair care, but faces huge discrimination in the United States with the piece of clothing banned from schools, workplaces, shopping malls – and is even banned by the NFL and the NBA.

There has been plenty of fightback against black-hair discrimination in recent months with the passing of The Crown Act in various states, which has made it illegal to discriminate against somebody for wearing their hair naturally or in styles such as braids, twists, knots or locs.

Telfar's aim is to continue to fight against this discrimination with its new line. You can find the full collection, which features five durags in different prints, here.
