All About Daisy Ridley and Tom Bateman's Relationship: From Meeting On Set to Their Latest Project

Actors Daisy Ridley and Tom Bateman met while filming 'Murder on the Orient Express'

Like many coupled-up actors, Daisy Ridley and Tom Bateman were costars first.

The pair met while working on Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 hit whodunnit Murder on the Orient Express, and they began dating shortly after. After dodging engagement rumors for years, Ridley confirmed that the two wed in a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone.

Ridley, who rose to prominence for her portrayal of Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, doesn’t shy away from publicly praising her husband’s talent. Bateman, who’s best known for his roles in the drama series Da Vinci’s Demons and Murder on the Orient Express, is also a screenwriter and his first written project, 2024's Magpie, stars Ridley in the lead role.

“I found that process wonderful because our tastes align on basically everything,” Ridley told the Radio Times, per the Daily Mail. “I think he’s a brilliant writer and we were so clear about what it is that we wanted to make. And we’ve achieved that.”

They met on the job

Ridley and Bateman began dating after the pair met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express. During the film’s world premiere in London in November 2017, producer Judy Hofflund hinted at a romance between the two.

When asked about his dating life that same night, Bateman kept things coy and deflected giving any details. A month later, the Daily Mail obtained photos of the couple celebrating at an afterparty for the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, further fueling dating rumors between the two.

Ridley and Bateman were rumored to be engaged for years

Although Ridley and Bateman have never confirmed when they got engaged, rumors of a proposal first sparked in 2019.

The actress was spotted wearing a diamond ring on her ring finger on numerous occasions that year and the next. Meanwhile, Bateman was at the center of engagement rumors in 2020 when he was spotted sporting a golden band on his ring finger while out with friend and costar Olivia Cooke.

In a 2019 interview with Marie Claire, Ridley addressed the ongoing rumors about the couple’s presumed engagement sharing simply, “It’s a really nice ring that I wear.”

They shared the news of their marriage in 2023

During promotion for her film Sometimes I Think About Dying, Ridley confirmed that she and Bateman got married. Speaking to Rolling Stone in January 2023, the actress simply shared, “Yes! I got married,” when asked about her ring.

A few months later, in April, Ridley and Bateman vacationed together in Ireland at the Castlewood House Dingle. The hotel’s owners shared a group photo with the pair on Instagram and wrote, “What a lovely couple!! Absolutely delighted to have the incredibly talented duo of actors Daisy Ridley and Tom Bateman stay with us.”

“So lovely to meet you both and can’t wait for you to visit us again,” they concluded.

Ridley and Bateman keep their relationship private

Like many A-list couples, Ridley and Bateman prefer to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. Over the years, the pair have remained tight-lipped on the details of their life together, and according to Ridley, it’s for the sake of protecting what they have.

In a 2021 interview with Tatler, the actress disclosed why she’s chosen to keep her relationship private, explaining, “When I signed on to Star Wars, there was nothing in my contract that said, ‘Your life will be talked about.’ ”

“It got to the point where I realized so much of my life was out there,” she continued. “I thought it would be nice to have something that’s for me, that isn’t for everybody else. I just thought I would keep that separate.”

They support each other on red carpets

Ridley and Bateman show up for each other at red carpet events. In September 2022, they made their first public appearance as a couple at a special screening of Blonde, starring Ana de Armas, at The Soho Hotel.

Later that same month, Ridley and Bateman attended the BFI Luminous Fundraising Gala at The Londoner Hotel and posed for photos together whilst wearing matching black attire.

In June 2023, the pair attended the London premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, supporting Ridley’s Star Wars costar, Harrison Ford. They were pictured holding hands while exiting the venue.

Ridley and Bateman enjoy working together

Considering that Ridley and Bateman met on the job, it’s no surprise that the couple decided to team up on another project together. Their 2024 film, Magpie, is a noir thriller written by Bateman and is based on Ridley’s original idea. The movie premiered in March 2024 at the SXSW festival, with Ridley starring in the lead role.

On the premiere's red carpet, Bateman gushed about his wife’s acting chops, telling CBR that Ridley is one of his “favorite actors.”

“Being able to write to what I know her strengths are was so rewarding,” he said. “I could be really daring and bold and write a whole scene with no dialogue and just her character’s thoughts. Sam [Yates] our director, he agreed. He said ‘Man you can just stick a camera on Daisy and she’s got it going and she can hold that.’ ”

“It was super, super rewarding,” he added.
