David Walliams' joke about Caroline Flack at the NTAs had a mixed reaction
The NTAs unfolded at the O2 arena in London last night [28 January], and as well as a surprise appearance from David Schwimmer and an emotional speech from Jesy Nelson, the crowd experienced a lot of screen time from host David Walliams.
And it's safe to say some jokes landed better than others, after many fans took to social media to criticise the Britain's Got Talent judge for making a dig about Caroline Flack.
The Love Island presenter is currently awaiting trial after being arrested for alleged assault following an altercation with her boyfriend in December. Other than a selection of Instagram Stories, she has avoided the spotlight and television appearances all together.
David's quip about Caroline came when he was joined on stage by Joel Dommett and Hedgehog from The Masked Singer - an unknown person dressed up in an oversized animal costume.
The pair presented the award for Best Serial Drama to Emmerdale, while giving a clue about who was in the Hedgehog costume. "I’m just going to quickly narrow it down for you," Joel began. "It’s not me. It’s also not David Walliams, or is it? It might not actually be the real Hedgehog in there. Spoiler alert: Hedgehog might actually be at home watching Love Island."
David replied, "It's nice to see Caroline Flack back on TV!" insinuating it was Caroline in the costume - which received a mixed reaction on social media, and was reportedly booed in the O2.
One person tweeted, "David Walliams didn’t just make that joke about Caroline Flack live on TV at the NTAs, did he?!" while another added, "David Walliams just thew shade at Caroline Flack #NTAs"
