‘All You Need Is Death’ Director Sets Next Horror Feature For 1185 Films

EXCLUSIVE: The director of Irish folk horror All you Need is Death has set his next feature project for 1185 Films, as the London indie unveils a slate with a number of up-and-coming directors attached.

Paul Duane is making The Empty Cell for 1185, another horror feature that is set in a prison in near-future Ireland. An unexpected occupant – a transgender woman – is sent to the prison, and when she dies in solitary confinement others start to succumb to a curse.

Duane’s previous feature All You Need is Death was set in the world of Irish folk ballads. It was acquired by XYZ Films and presented at New Orleans Overlook Film Festival alongside the likes of Universal’s Abigail, receiving positive reviews from critics.

1185, which was founded by Nick Franco, has set a hefty film and TV slate that includes an Irish comedy movie titled Ziggy from Father Ted cinematographer Eugene O’Connor.

Meanwhile, Code of Silence director Ben Mole is helming The Worm Moon, described as “an atmospheric, disquieting story set in the ‘70s rock world,” while Ghosted‘s Daniel Pacquette is working on a number of projects that 1185 said would “advance a fresh Black voice and exciting new perspective in independent British cinema.”

Finally, Sky Arts’ Marina Abramović Takes Over TV co-director Lucy Gaster is behind Moll [working title], a feature doc about the life of painter Molly Parkin, and Ben Hooton is making coming-of-age drama Eggshell Blue.

Several co-producing partners are attached to the projects, we understand.

1185 has also hired a development exec as a consultant, Stephen James Thompson, who will head up the feature film and TV slate. He will continue to run Page2Screen Films, the development company he set up in 2016.

Thompson is the latest to join 1185, following the addition of Stephen Arnell and Chris Cowey who both came aboard in the last year.

Franco said: “Paul Duane and I have been working together for 20 years and his career has continued on an upward trajectory with the current release of All You Need Is Death. I’m incredibly excited to build on this and welcome such an impressive group of new directors to the fold. Our new found relationship with XYZ Films and Stephen James Thompson overseeing our slate means our proposition is incredibly valuable.”
