Dennis Quaid voices support for Donald Trump: 'People might call him an a--hole, but he's my a--hole'

The "Lawmen: Bass Reeves" actor says he plans to vote for the former president in November, but that wasn't always the case.

Former President Donald Trump has actor Dennis Quaid's support in this year's election.

The Lawmen: Bass Reeves actor said Tuesday on Piers Morgan Uncensored that in the elections of 2016 and 2020, he would sometimes cringe over what Trump had said. But he's decided to support Trump at the ballot box, because he liked how he conducted himself in office.

"As president, the only thing I liked about Trump was everything he did," Quaid said.

The actor specifically cited Trump's handling of the pandemic back in an April 2020 conversation with the Daily Beast. When he was asked about his outlook on the issue, Quaid said, "Well, to tell you the truth, I think the president is handling it in a good way."

He said then that he was an independent.

"I've voted both ways throughout my life, swinging like a pendulum toward what the country needed at the time — and I think this might be an opportunity for the country to come together again."

When speaking to Morgan this week, Quaid pointed out that he hadn't always been behind the former president, who is embroiled in four criminal cases.

"It just makes sense. I was ready not to vote for Trump until what I saw as — more than politics — I see a weaponization of our justice system and a challenge to our constitution," Quaid said.

At one point, he summed up his feelings: "People might call him an a--hole, but he's my a--hole."

The interview turned to politics after Quaid spoke about his upcoming biopic on former President Ronald Reagan, called simply Reagan, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters Aug. 30. Mena Suvari, C. Thomas Howell, Penelope Ann Miller, and Jon Voight costar.

"I didn't say no, but I didn't... it took a long time to take the role because I was overwhelmed by it," Quaid explained. "It really sent fear down my spine, which is an indication that I should probably do that, because it get me out of my comfort zone. But it took me a while, I guess because I idolized him a bit. And I didn't want to bring that into it."

In fact, Quaid said Reagan is his favorite president. He didn't want to do an impersonation of the politician, but he watched video of Reagan on YouTube and read books about him to prepare.

Quaid said the filmmakers ended up telling the story "warts and all, in a certain sense."

In January 2021, the star told Entertainment Weekly that the role of Reagan in the long-awaited film was the most interesting he had ever done.

"I tried to share some of that human frailty, because none of us are perfect," he said. "It was an honor to play him."
