Exciting news, Dirty Dancing fans: Baby is officially coming out of that corner for a sequel to the classic 1987 film.

Original star Jennifer Grey will reprise her role in the project, but it's not yet clear in exactly what capacity and no plot details have been released.

However, Jon Feltheimer, chief executive of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, did tease that the film will be a lot like the much-loved original.

"It will be exactly the kind of romantic nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history," he said, and it sounds exactly like what we need right now.

Grey will also serve as a producer on the project, while Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine will be at the helm.

The OG film, which was made on a $5million budget but went on to earn almost $220 million at the box office globally, made huge stars out of Grey, who played student Frances 'Baby' Houseman and the late Patrick Swayze, who starred as dance instructor Johnny Castle.

This wouldn't be the first Dirty Dancing follow up, with Havana Nights starring Diego Luna and Romola Garai being released in 2004 and a musical re-imagining starring Abigail Breslin and Nicole Scherzinger coming out on TV in 2017.

Grey was asked to make a cameo in the TV remake, but turned it down. Explaining why she didn't take the role, she told The Hollywood Reporter: "I was asked to do something on that show and I was flattered because I always want to be asked because it’s nice to want to be included.

"But for me, it would be sacrosanct for me to do it because it didn’t feel appropriate to me. It feels like if you’re going to do your own thing, do your own thing."

She added, "I wouldn’t say [what the role was] but I will tell you, it wasn’t Baby."

We're glad they're finally making the sequel Baby deserves.
