Disney has become the first studio in history to make over $10 billion in a single year at the worldwide box office.

As of this weekend, the Mouse House has made a staggering $11.94 billion – just over £9 billion – in 2019 thanks to a slew of blockbuster movies.

It beats its previous record of $7.6 billion in 2016 convincingly.

Movies such as Avengers: Endgame (which made over $1 billion in its opening weekend alone and $2.8 billion in all), Captain Marvel ($1.13 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion), Aladdin ($1.05 billion) and The Lion King remake ($1.65 billion) all contributed to the cause.

But it was Frozen 2's $919 million that pushed Disney's total to $9.997 billion over the weekend. With figures. When added to movies from Fox, which Disney bought earlier this year, the total hits the $11.94 figure.

And this comes ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, which will land the UK on December 19 (and the rest of the world on December 20).

Though it's being released close to the end of the year, it could potentially add another billion dollars to the haul, with the right prevailing winds, if not several hundred more million.

If Rise of Skywalker can bring in $1 billion before 2020, Disney will have released 7 billion-dollar movies this year.

Next year might not be quite as profitable, however, with fewer obvious blockbusters on Disney’s slate, and now no Avengers to guarantee a huge boost.

Nonetheless, its live action remake of Mulan arrives in March, followed by Marvel’s Black Widow, Jungle Cruise with The Rock and Emily Blunt, and The Eternals with Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie in November.
