A new iteration of The Office is coming — and Steve Carell received a call from the actor who landed the lead role.

Carell — who famously starred as Michael Scott in Greg Daniels' adaptation of the U.K. sitcom — dished on the newly-announced spinoff series during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as he revealed that he spoke to Domhnall Gleeson before the actor accepted the role.

"I know Domhnall Gleeson – who I did The Patient with – is going to be one of the leads. I know that for sure," Carell, 61, told Jimmy Fallon on the June 10 episode. "He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something… Did you enjoy it?’ I said of course."

"He’s great," Carell added of the Irish actor, 41.

While not much is known about the spinoff — which was announced in May — it's set to star The White Lotus' Sabrina Impacciatore alongside Gleeson, and production is slated to begin in July.

The yet unnamed series will see the same documentary crew that "immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch in search of a new subject." The crew will discover "a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters," per a release.

Carell has previously spoken about the spinoff series, telling The Hollywood Reporter following the announcement, "I will be watching but I will not be showing up."

"It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that,” he said. “But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great concept. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company."

John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert on The Office, expressed similar excitement when asked about the spinoff at the premiere of IF on May 13.

"I know nothing about it other than I think it's taking place in a newspaper, a local newspaper and that Domhnall Gleeson, who I am working with right now, who’s the sweetest most talented guy, he’s going to crush… whatever it is… he’s going to crush it," Krasinksi, 44, told PEOPLE.

He said he hadn't been "asked" to reprise his role as of yet, but added, "The truth is I’d do anything Greg Daniels asked me to do."

Mindy Kaling will also never say never about a potential reprisal of her character, the iconic Kelly Kapoor.

She told PEOPLE in 10 she would "of course" consider a return if she was ever asked as she admitted, "For that group of people, I would definitely — I'd be open to it."

Of the spinoff, Kaling, 44, said, "I think it's gonna be great."
