The MD of Athena Network Singapore & Cofounder of Connected Women feels that entrepreneurship is more accessible than ever before & a realistic option for women
Technology is a great enabler for startups and small business, and entrepreneurship is closer home to women these days, feels Gina Romero, Managing Director, Athena Network Singapore, a community of female executives and entrepreneurs in the APAC region.
Romero said this while commenting on the community’s long-term partnership with Starhub and Microsoft to drive technology adoption among women-led businesses. The alliance is part of a long-term initiative to support growth and productivity within the female business and startup ecosystem through technology focused events, training and workshops.
Marking the beginning of the partnership series, is ‘Powering Women in Business‘, a conference being held on November 26, this year, in Singapore, and organised by Connected Women, a community dedicated to driving technology adoption. Romero is also the Co-founder of Connected Women.

“Technology is a great enabler for startups and small business – having access to technology in the early days of business develops credibility against the bigger players out there who have more capital,” says Romero, adding, “It (technology) gives the ability to reach more people, do more research, gain more knowledge, profile expertise and scale businesses in a way that was not possible before.”
Romero is “excited” about the partnership with Starhub and Microsoft, which she felt was a good “opportunity to not only show how technology adoption can grow businesses, but also to show entrepreneurship is more accessible than ever before and a realistic option for women.”
The event will host keynote presentations from business experts and technology influencers. Jessica Tan, Managing Director of Microsoft SG and Mock Pak Lum, Chief Technology Officer of StarHub are the keynote speakers at the conference, besides other interactive technology training sessions that will cover topics ranging from social media and e-commerce to productivity. According to a survey by a focus group formed by women-led Singapore startups and small businesses, invoicing, manual processes, contact management, multiple software interfaces, team collaboration, online marketing and skill gaps present ongoing problems for startups. The event hopes to find solutions to address some of these challenges. “The right tools can literally make or break businesses, especially in the early stages,” says Amanda Blum, Co-founder and researcher at Connected Women.
“The undertaking of Connected Women, and for the conference, is to create more understanding around the tools and technology available and how they can be applied so small businesses and startups can be more productive, more profitable, more powerful and more resilient,” she adds.
