Exclusive: The Boys' Aya Cash and Colby Minifie discuss bloody season 2, episode 7 scene
The Boys episode seven spoilers follow – including its ending.
From a monster penis, levitating superhero sex and Starlight's close shave with Hughie, we weren't sure that our jaws could drop any further towards the floor. But then, the final moments of The Boys' seventh episode unfolded before our eyes – and now we need to unpack what in the blue Homelander just happened.
For one blinking second, it looked as though Butcher and his crew were about to get a pretty big one over on Vought International and their band of supes. Having managed to threaten the company's former CEO into providing evidence against its dodgy dealings (we're trying not to think too much about the super consequences he would have faced for doing so), the press and representatives of both sides turned out for what promised to be the hearing of the century.
But as we've come to learn by now – the take-down-Vought plan was hardly about to run smoothly, was it?
Just as he was about to start answering questions under oath, his head exploded. That's one way to shut someone up, we suppose.
We'd already witnessed CIA agent Raynor's head bite the dust earlier in the season and, having visited the hospital of dodgy super experiments we now know the probable Eleven-style culprit of such an attack.
But we still were not expecting the bloodbath that followed.
Giving Game of Thrones' Red Wedding a run for its money, it seemed that nobody in the room was going to be immune from the threat of self-implosion (with the exception of Homelander and Stormfront, who would most likely brush it off as routine headache).
With blood and brains splattering everywhere, a frenzy to escape the room ensued, but, perhaps unsurprisingly, the main players made it out unscathed. Still wanted fugitives, Butcher and his band were watching from the safe distance of their underground bunker.
We recently caught up with some of The Boys cast and couldn't pass up the opportunity to go behind the scenes of the chaos and find out what went into filming such a scene.
"Oh my god, that was like a two-day shoot and it was insane," Aya Cash, who plays Stormfront, told Digital Spy during an exclusive chat.
"It was overnight, I mean it was so crazy... but my favourite part of that night was simply we all gathered to watch Colby Minifie [who plays Vought's no-nonsense PR woman Ashley Barrett] act because she was so funny in that scene [laughs] it was so good and she was so excited.
"She was like 'When do I get squirted by blood?'. She was so excited and it was so entertaining and her screams were so horrifying."
Talking about her own character role in the scene, Aya explained: "Homelander and I had the easiest part of that, because we're just sort of [facial expression] 'Okay, what's happening?' because we're strong and we're not afraid, whereas everybody else has to do some major acting. And Colby has some of the best screams I've ever heard."
"I feel like I've made my career screaming on various projects," Colby told Digital Spy (she has also starred in Fear the Walking Dead). "I loved filming that [scene] so much. It was one of my favourite things to film. I love getting squirted by blood [laughs]. I don't know what's gotten to me."
But it turns out that the scene didn't exactly go to plan on set that day.
"The blood cannon that was hitting my face in that one shot, it was supposed to hit me in the chest... [They had] stuffed this blood cannon full of paper and banana and like brains and you know made it look as grotesque as possible," Colby added.
"We rehearsed it a bunch of times and we only had one shot at actually shooting this thing, and when it went off I was leaning down a little too far and the blood canon went directly in my face. And it felt like someone took a dictionary and just smacked my face.
"And it was one of my favourite moments. I was like 'yes! yes, that's what I want.'"
With The Boys' season two's finale only one week away (due October 9), we can't wait to see what this terrifying supe weapon might mean going forward...
