Extinction Rebellion protesters attempted to bring London to a standstill as they began two weeks of demonstrations to urge governments around the world to take action on the climate crisis.

Police arrested more than 270 people by Monday evening, including an 81-year-old woman, after activists occupied several sites around the capital including Trafalgar Square, Westminster Bridge and Lambeth Bridge.

Extinction Rebellion say the protests will be five times bigger than the demonstrations in April which brought parts of London to a standstill.

Demonstrations are also taking place in 23 cities across the world as part of the group's "international rebellion".
