SINGAPORE — Social networking service Facebook on Friday (17 May) launched a new feature to help users better control what they see in their News Feed.

By tapping on the “Why Am I Seeing This Post” feature, users will have four ways to customise their experience.

  • Unfollow: When you unfollow someone, you won’t see their posts in your News Feed, but you’ll still be friends with them.

  • Snooze: When you temporarily snooze a person, Page or group, you won’t see their posts in your News Feed for the amount of time you select.

  • Hide: Hiding a single post gives you the option to see fewer posts from a specific person, Page or group.

  • See First: When you select a person or Page to see first, their posts appear at the top of your News Feed. The person or Page won’t know you selected them.

The “Why Am I Seeing This Post” feature also lets users understand why a certain post shows up at the top of their News Feed, or why it appears at all.

For instance, the post could have been from a friend a user has made, a Group he or she has joined, or a Page the user follows.

Among other things, users will be able to see how often they’ve interacted with similar posts, and the popularity of the posts shared by the people, Pages and Groups they follow.

“People tell us they want to learn more about how their News Feed works and why they see certain posts,” said Facebook News Feed product manager Ramya Sethuraman.

“This feature lays out why people see certain content in their News Feeds and makes it easier for them to control what they see. That way, if there is something they want more or less of, they can further personalise their experience,” she added.

The new feature is an extension of the “Why Am I Seeing This Ad” feature that is already available for advertisements on Facebook.

The “Why Am I Seeing This Post” feature will roll out gradually worldwide from Friday. It will be available to all users by the end of the month.
