Singapore’s largest supermarket chain FairPrice announced on Monday (18 March) that it will freeze the prices of 100 of its housebrand products until 30 June 2020, one of two initiatives to alleviate the daily costs of essential groceries for its customers.

The other initiative is to allow all Merdeka Generation members – those who were born from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 1959 – to enjoy a 3 per cent discount when they shop at FairPrice stores on Wednesdays. This will begin from 1 July for a one-year period.

Its chief executive officer Seah Kian Peng said, “As part of the NTUC group of Social Enterprises serving various purposes for Singaporeans, FairPrice continues to play our part in moderating cost of living.

“We pledge to hold prices for 100 frequently-purchased everyday essential products in our housebrand range to protect Singaporeans from any price fluctuations. At the same time, we have also dropped prices of some 50 popular housebrand products.”

Products include rice, oil, batteries and toiletries

The 100 grocery and household products were selected based on popular customer purchases, which are representative of the average household in Singapore.

The items include rice, oil, beverages and poultry, in addition to batteries, snacks, toiletries and household cleansers.

By dropping prices for the 50-odd everyday essentials – some by as much as 30 per cent – FairPrice said it has ensured that all 100 of the selected housebrand products are priced at least 20 per cent cheaper than comparable leading brands.

A cushion against possible price increases

FairPrice said that its commitment to hold prices will help to cushion Singaporeans against possible price increases for everyday essentials over the next year, regardless of changes in supply and external factors.

As for its 3-per-cent Wednesday discount for Merdeka Generation members, the initiative honours and shows appreciation for the older generation’s contributions to the nation.

Members will need to present their Merdeka Generation Cards or valid identifications to the cashier to qualify for the discount.
