The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) put out a large fire at Jurong Island on Tuesday morning (13 June). SCDF said on its Facebook page that it was alerted to a blaze at 1 Merlimau Road at about 9.50am and dispatched resources to the scene.

The fire occurred within a crude distillation unit in the Singapore Refining Company. It was extinguished by the SCDF and the company’s in-house emergency response team using ground monitors and several handheld jets at about 11.10am.

In a Facebook update, SCDF said that “the company’s in-house emergency response team was immediately activated” and that “water monitors and several large capacity fire extinguishers were deployed to mitigate the fire”.

SCDF added that they were carrying out foaming operations. There were no casualties reported.

Photos and videos of the fire showing plumes of black smoke rising up next to refinery chimneys have been posted on social media.
