First dibs: Mom’s Touch, The Centrepoint — Chocolate-coated fried chicken for a Halloween-themed scare

When I say that this job pushes me right out of my comfort zone, I mean that I try the wackiest food that normally I’d pass on without so much as a second thought. It’s not even the end of September yet, but Mom’s Touch has Halloween preparations in full swing. You may be wondering how a fast food joint is celebrating Halloween, right?

Well, the answer is with spicy, chocolate-coated fried chicken topped with peanuts.

No, this isn’t a practical joke. Mom’s Touch’s Halloween-themed meals include a Freaky Chicken Set (S$9.50), which comes with two pieces of spicy fried chicken coated with a layer of chocolate and sprinkled with nuts. The heat from the freshly fried chicken keeps the chocolate sauce runny and melted, and the cognitive dissonance that arose out of eating savoury, crispy fried chicken that’s somehow sweet and chocolatey made me pause. This combination’s popular in Korea where it originated from, and all I can say is not to knock it until you try it.

Deep-fried food’s oiliness doesn’t typically make me excited, but you’ll be glad to know that the chocolate helps to mask it pretty well. Just like dipping your fried chicken into ketchup or chilli sauce, this chocolate coating adds an unorthodox level of flavour that I was surprised at how much I enjoyed. Once you get past the thick layer of oozy chocolate, it’s just fried chicken, and nothing can go wrong with that. Is it wacky, ingenious, or just eateries trying to fix a good ol’ fried chicken when it’s not broken? I think it’s a little bit of all three, but it’s worth giving it a try, at least once.

This meal at Mom’s Touch will probably be the messiest meal you’ll ever eat—the heat from the fried chicken keeps the chocolate melted and runny, so make sure that you keep your brand new white tote bag at home, and not rest it on your lap thinking you’ll be fine. Speaking from personal experience—unfortunately.

If you’re trying to err on the side of caution, then opt for the Bloody Burger Set (S$10.50), which comes with one spicy chocolate-coated fried chicken, along with Mom’s Spicy Thigh Burger. You’ll get to try out the chocolate-coated fried chicken, whilst still getting a proper meal, even if it isn’t as much a wonder as chocolate-coated is.

Mom’s Touch will be running their Halloween offerings from now until 1 November 2021 and is available at all their outlets—The Centrepoint, Paya Lebar Quarter, and Eastwood Centre.
