Majulah Singapura was played during the first victory ceremony at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. And the 28th SEA Games hasn’t even officially begun.

An all-Singapore final in the women’s doubles table tennis secured the nation’s first gold and silver medals of the games.

In a surprise upset, Lin Ye and Zhou Yihan beat Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu 11-7, 5-11, 8-11, 10-12, 11-3, 12-10, 7-11.

Feng, an Olympic medalist, and Yu were down three sets to one, but stormed back to take the fourth set 11-3.

The battle for gold went all the way down to the seventh set, which Lin and Zhou took 11-7.

Lin and Zhou had earlier struggled to get past Thai duo Nanthana Komwong and Suthasini Sawettabut in the semi-finals.

Speaking in Mandarin after the match, Zhou said, "We didn't think so much about the outcome. We've never beaten them before so it was more about trying our best."
