Fisker's fiercest rivals

Henrik Fisker is returning to the premium automotive market with what he claims will be a paradigm-changing electric car. When it is unveiled in the second half of 2017, it will offer both superior range and more cabin space than any current competitor. And even though the electric car market is still in its very early stages of development thanks to the likes of Tesla and BMW, the competition is already fierce, and, by the time the new Fisker car goes into production, could be fiercer still.

Tesla Model S
Still the benchmark for eco-conscious executives, the latest iteration of the EV sedan is capable of between 219 and 302 miles (352-486km) on a single charge depending on battery pack specification. And when specified with all-wheel drive it is one of the fastest accelerating cars in the world (0-60mph in 2.5 seconds). And while recent consumer reports suggest occasional build quality issues, the car can't be faulted in terms of luggage and cabin space (two trunks, one front, one rear) nor on creature comforts, connectivity and active driver safety technology.

Aston Martin RapidE
Very little in the automotive world says premium or exclusive like a car sporting the Aston Martin badge. The British supercar firm is currently developing a production ready take on its Rapide four-door, four-seat DB9-inspired grand tourer. It will be going on sale in 2017, just as the new Fisker arrives, and will initially promise a 200-mile (320km) range and 550hp. However, it will be swiftly followed by a 1000hp version.

GLM G4
This is a marque that most have never heard of. Pitched as the world's first electric exotic vehicle, the GLM G4 is a four-seat, four-door all electric supercar that made its official debut at the Paris Motor Show. It uses two electric motors that generate 1000Nm of torque, 500+hp, a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h. Furthermore, its creators claim it will manage 400km (248 miles) on a single charge.

BMW i5
BMW officially debuted an i3 electric city car with an improved 300km (186 mile) range at this year's Paris Motor Show. However, the compact plug-in vehicle is about to get a larger, more practical and comfortable big brother. Potentially badged the i5, it will offer a liftback trunk, four full sized doors and space for five.

Porsche Mission E
Unveiled in concept form at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, there is no other way of describing this vehicle than as a true family supercar. Capable of travelling 500km on a single charge and of hitting 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, this car really will be a game changer when it officially goes on sale in 2020. But expect the production model to make its real-world debut as soon as the 2018 Geneva motor show.
