Commuters who end their journey in the city area before 7:45 am on weekdays will continue to enjoy free MRT rides until June 30, 2017.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo, who announced the extension on Thursday (June 23), says about 65,000 commuters benefit from the Free Pre-Peak Travel scheme daily.

Those who exit the 18 designated MRT stations between 7: 45 am and 8 am will continue to get a discount of up to 50 cents off their train fare.

Since it was introduced in June 2013, the Land Transportation Authority (LTA) says they have seen a seven to eight per cent reduction in the number of commuters during the morning peak hours.

More than 100 companies have partnered with the government to encourage their staff to travel during off-peak periods and use alternative modes of transport.
