Singapore’s transport minister Lui Tuck Yew will not be contesting in the coming General Election, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"My senior colleagues and I tried hard to change his mind, and are disappointed that we did not succeed,” Mr Lee said in the post, which had a photo of him and Lui taken at SMRT Bishan Depot in May.

Despite giving Liu a “very difficult job” of overseeing the transport ministry in 2011, Lee noted that Lui “did not hesitate” to take it.

Lee ended his post with a tribute, “We will miss Tuck Yew. I thank him for all that he has done for Singapore over the last decade, and wish him all the best in future."

The news came after the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee dissolved the Moulmein-Kallang GRC last month. Lui, who was the Member of Parliament for the constituency, had “expressed disappointment” over the move.

Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim also posted a tribute to Lui on Facebook.

"It has been my privilege to serve alongside Lui Tuck Yew in Moulmein-Kallang GRC these last 4 years... On behalf of the Moulmein-Kallang residents, I would like to thank Tuck Yew for his dedication and wish him all the very best," he said.
