HoYoverse, the developer behind the the smash-hit RPG Genshin Impact, has opened a new round of closed beta testing for its latest title, Honkai: Star Rail, on Thursday (28 April).

Honkai: Star Rail is the newest entry to HoYoverse's Honkai series after Honkai Impact 3rd.

The series follows the concept of a malevolent and corrupting force that causes widespread destruction, the titular Honkai, and the fighters staving off this catastrophe with elemental and physical powers.

Honkai: Star Rail will introduce a stand-alone story from Honkai Impact 3rd, featuring all-new characters and familiar faces from the Honkai series.

The game also sports HoYoverse's signature anime-style graphics and animations that both Honkai Impact 3rd and Genshin Impact players will be very familiar with.

Honkai: Star Rail is notably HoYoverse's first foray into the turn-based RPG genre.

HoYoverse says Honkai: Star Rail's strategic turn-based combat system will be "newcomer-friendly" while exploration will take place on large maps and mazes.

The story of Honkai: Star Rail features a world awaiting discovery, with elements of myths and legends melded into the backdrop of its space sci-fi setting.

In this universe, there are incarnations of universal principles, called the Aeons, that are able to travel freely between infinite worlds using primitive forces.

The Aeons uphold their own beliefs, among them are the Destruction. They regard the universe as fallacious and civilization as a cancer, casting seeds of ruin called Stellaron across the galaxy.

The game's protagonist, implanted with a Stellaron (similar to the Herrschers from Honkai Impact 3rd but for the entire universe), embarks on a journey aboard the Astral Express, the titular 'Star Rail'.

They join a group of passengers who claim to have inherited the spirit of the Trailblaze, following the paths of the Aeons, seeking the ultimate answers to their journey’s purpose and unearthing the secrets buried within their legends.

The first closed beta for Honkai: Star Rail took place last year, running from 26 October to 1 November, and was only open to iPhone users. The second beta phase will be open to PC, Android, and iOS platforms.

Interested players can sign up on the official Honkai: Star Rail website, with the beta's kick-off date and schedule to be revealed at a later date. The full release date for Honkai: Star Rail has yet to be revealed.
