Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter over the death of George Floyd. Mr Floyd’s family called on authorities to amend the charges to murder in the first degree.

Donald Trump spoke to Mr Floyd’s family, saying there was “no excuse” for what the country has witnessed. And while demonstrators had been protesting for the right reasons in expressing their sorrow for Mr Floyd, the rule of law would prevail.

The National Guard has been called into Minneapolis and a curfew placed on the city over the weekend after three nights of violent riots, which saw Minneapolis police station set ablaze.
